1 - Check the door hinges

Sometimes, a loose door seal or weather strip can be due to misaligned hinges. Give them a tighten with your screwdriver before starting to install the new seal.

2 – Measure the door jamb

Take your tape measure and check the door’s dimensions, measuring from the top of the frame to each side.

3 – Remove the old weather seal

If you have existing weather stripping on your door, use pliers to remove the original weather strip. Ensure you remove it from both sides of the door; you may need to clean around the edges to remove dirt.

4 - Install the new weather seal

Take a new piece of weather stripping and cut it with a hacksaw based on the measurements you took earlier. You’ll also need to trim the foam strip with a sharp pair of scissors. Align it around the door frame, then slot it in place with nails. It may be easier to start from the floor, then work your way up.

Once you reach the top of the door frame, cut off any excess weather stripping so that it fits correctly to ensure a tighter seal. Get another piece of weather stripping and install across the top of the door frame. Again, cut off any excess stripping.

Make sure you install the weather stripping along the last side, then you’re finished.

Your new door seal is now good to go. For more information on weather-proofing your property, check out our expert guide.
